Environmental Alliancefor
Senior Involvement
Pennsylvania SEC
overview
Established in 1997, the Pennsylvania Senior Environment Corps (PaSEC)
now has nearly two thousand volunteers of all ages, led by senior citizens
who regularly monitor water quality at more than one thousand sites around
the state.
PaSEC is a program of the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement
(EASI), in partnership with the Pennsylvania Departments of Aging and Environmental
Protection, the William Penn Foundation, the Howard Heinz Endowment, the
Pennsylvania Business Round Table and many others.
EASI is a national non-profit coalition of environmental, aging
and volunteer organizations. Its mission is to increase opportunities
for older adults to play an active, visible role in protecting and improving
the environment in their communities.
The Pennsylvania SECs test the waters in all of Pennsylvania’s
major watersheds for acidity, dissolved oxygen and temperature, using Hach
Company chemical test kits and state-approved protocols for the assessments.
Volunteers enter test results into an innovative electronic database that
links citizen water monitoring groups throughout the state.
The program has expanded to 47 Pennsylvania counties and has produced
a Training Manual, Field Manual, Quality Assurance Project Plan and other
resource materials. The volunteer retention rate is 90 percent.
“I recently read that the three most important things in life
are to enjoy what you do, spend time with people you like, and enjoy nature,”
said Hal Krieger, a PaSEC volunteer in Philadelphia. “The PaSEC fulfills
all three for me.”
During the International Year of The Volunteer observance
in 2001, PaSEC sponsored over 100 events in Pennsylvania communities and
participated in more than 200 more events. PaSEC also sponsored a
statewide training and networking conference that drew participants from
many other states and countries.
